From internet café to growing IT business

Written by Edwin Tshivhidzo

A  passion for computers, information technology, and helping community members acquire computer skills made Richard and Modiehi Montoeli start Richys Training Centre and Technology in Senekal, Free State province.

The company started as an internet café operating from a rented container. Today, it has grown and provides services that include computer training, tutoring, electronic repairs services, and business administrative and compliance services. The company's establishment was welcomed by the locals, especially young people.

“It was not an easy start because we had no idea or knowledge regarding business finance institutions and the importance of starting and working capital. Things began to make sense when we started attending different workshops, organised by the public sector [Small Enterprise Finance Agency (sefa)],” Richard said.

He explained that the company’s focus was the internet café, but he was presented with an opportunity to venture into other aspects that allowed it to grow.

Richys Training Centre and Technology’s growth expansion began in March 2015, with the introduction of computer lessons for children.

In 2016, the company added tutoring services to its list of services, this is the same year that the business moved to a bigger operating space. Richys Training Centre and Technology now has a second branch in the Bethlehem, Free State.

Richard said innovation has always been the heart of business especially since he has also introduced gaming.

“In 2023, with the efforts to increase cash flow, I started inviting local kids to play video games using computers for cash and that was the beginning of a successful business venture.”

The company employs four people, working on a full-time basis.

“Information technology is everywhere, from simply using your microwave oven at home to working on a computer at work. By embracing information technology, you unlock the transformative powers of technology andbridge the digital divide.”

Richard added that sefa played a big role in the growth of the company. “The process of applying for financial assistance [with sefa] was an easy one. We had to complete an application form online.”

“The funding we received from sefa was that of the COVID-19 fund. Those funds we mainly used for salaries and working capital. We have an application now in progress, if approved, we are going to expand our computer labs and branding,” he said.¥
