Being a woman in a built environment is no walk in the park, especially for a young black professional. 

At 30, Abongile Mntu Mketsu, director for infrastructure procurement at the Department of Transport, is already curving her path in the male-dominated industry. 

“Industry conditions are not always favourable to females, especially site conditions and the constant relocation,” the Mdantsane, in East London, Eastern Cape, native told Vuk’uzenzele.

Concerned by the trend of science graduates struggling to secure employment, a young agricultural technologist set up an innovative business that is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with.  

Mmapula Lesailane, 27, is the director of Tzaneen-based award-winning agri-science company, Mater Pluviam Holdings. The company, which currently employs five people, aims to find scientific solutions and close the gap between science knowledge and its application.

While South Africa continues to tackle poverty and unemployment, a youth-owned cooperative in Mpumalanga believes that riches are in the soil.

Intandekho Agricultural Primary Cooperative was in 2019 registered by six young people of Amsterdam in Mkhondo Local Municipality.

Luyanda Machava did not have to think twice about what she wanted to do with her life after she completed school.

While others were making their way off to university, she was already thinking about her business.

“I knew I did not want to study further, I just wanted to run my business,” she said. Growing up in Mataffin in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, the 21-year-old was raised by her grandmother after her parents passed away. 

A combination of tragic events and good fortune led Nokwanda Mngadi to start her hair care business in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.

After battling depression and struggling with her studies in Gauteng, Mngadi moved to KwaZulu-Natal and started Afrotexture in her home province.

A year has passed since we launched the Energy Action Plan to resolve the loadshedding crisis, and we are now able to report significant progress in several areas.
