Catherine Khoza’s life spiralled into disarray after her mother died on the day she passed her matric about 20 years ago.
She dusted herself off and got back on her feet after a 10 year “blackout”.
“I forgot about my matric and about furthering my education. I started taking care of my son and siblings after having a blackout when my mother died,” she told Vukuzenzele in a recent interview.
Today, Khoza holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and teaches at a school in the North West.
Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu has encouraged the new cohort of students at the Cape Town Society for the Blind to use the year-long course to learn, grow and provide for their families.

Matriculants who have not yet secured admission to institutions of higher learning have a second chance to gain entrance into those institutions, thanks to the Central Application Clearing House (CACH).
The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) said the CACH service for 2024 is open from 26 January until 31 March 2024. This is a free service provided by the department to both the applicants and institutions.
“Learners who have completed Grade 12 from 2000 onwards will be eligible to sign-up,” the department said.

He recently gave an update on the implementation of the Energy Action Plan, which aims to relieve pressure on the electricity system.
Minister Ramokgopa explained that tremendous progress is being done to ensure that solutions are found for transmission.
