Two young entrepreneurs are running a dynamic business that empowers and creates job opportunities for local youth.
Khutzmo (Pty Ltd), founded in 2021 by Managing Director Nhlakanipho Khuzzy Zwane (32) and Project Manager Karabo Mphathi Mogotsi (24), was officially registered in 2024. The company specialises in a range of agricultural projects, including seasonal crops, pig and pork sales, egg production, broiler chicken sales, logistics, entertainment, and maintenance.
Mogotsi explained: “The reason for the company’s multifaceted approach is to diversify revenue streams, ensuring longevity and continuous income. This also enables us to empower underprivileged youth through skills development and employment on a larger scale, while contributing to social development and the South African economy.”
The founders’ backgrounds blend technical expertise with business acumen. Zwane holds a BTech degree in Film and Television Production, as well as an N3 and N4 in Electrical Engineering certificates. Mogotsi, meanwhile, has a college certificate in Business Studies.
Despite their diverse skill sets, they have faced considerable challenges, particularly financial instability. Without a reliable income stream, the founders struggled to maintain consistent cash flow, which also affected their workers and local clients.
In December 2024, they suffered a significant setback when 680 chickens were lost to flu and a mosquito infestation, while 18 pigs were stolen from their previous leased premises in Winterveldt.
“We refused to give up. We secured a new lease on a more arable and secure plot in Mmasebolane, Legonyane, where we are now rebuilding our operations,” said Mogotsi.
Legonyane is located in the North West province.
The move to a new location has given the business a fresh start, with plans in place to improve production efficiency. The founders are also seeking grants and financial support to restore the business to full capacity and ensure its long-term sustainability.
Khutzmo currently employs three permanent staff members and over eight seasonal workers. These employees are vital to the company’s operations, and the founders are optimistic that as the business grows, they will be able to expand their workforce further.
Through their company, Zwane and Mogotsi aim to provide more job opportunities for young people in their community while contributing to broader economic development.
