Bursary opportunities for heritage related studies

South Africans who are not older than forty years of age and wish to pursue studies in heritage related programmes are invited to apply for bursaries before 31 January 2025.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture said applicants must be accepted [even provisionally] to study at institutions that are accredited and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training for the 2025 academic year.

“The maximum value of the bursary is R110 000 per student. A breakdown of the value of the bursary can be found on the department’s website. The department is only able to award 45 to 50 applicants. Therefore, applying does not automatically mean that the applicant will be awarded the bursary,” the department explained.

The bursaries will be awarded to applicants who have outstanding or satisfactory academic performance, who are not employed full time by government, state agencies or private sector and earn less than R130 000.

Students that are beneficiaries of other bursaries will not qualify to receive the bursary.

The bursary will be funding the following courses:

  • Anthropology and preferably Postgraduates specialising in Forensics.
  • Archaeology and preferably Postgraduates specialising in Bioarchaeology.
  • Geography and Geomatic sciences and preferably Postgraduates specialising in Cartography and Geographic Information System.
  • Archives and Records management.
  • Library and Information sciences.
  • Conservation of the built environment including preventive conservation (this includes only a field of study and not a course/subject of study).
  • Heritage and Museum studies.
  • Palaeontology.
  • Indigenous Knowledge Systems or courses that contribute to the preservation and promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems and South Africa Living Heritage.
  • History.
  • Digitisation of heritage resources.

For your application to be considered, the department requires applicants to attach documents including certified copies of a valid South African identity document, and national senior certificate (matric) or a certified copy of latest academic results or progress report for those who are already doing post graduate studies.

Applicants must also attach a letter of provisional acceptance or proof of registration.

You should consider your application unsuccessful if you do not receive a response by 31 March 2025.
